Not sure anyone will read this, but decided to just start my own musical diary of discovery here......you know, stuff I stumble across, songs, bands, experiences.....anything that gets me excited enough to write it down! If you do read this and enjoy it - would be great to hear from you! Share something with me.......lead me on!!!
Scott McMicken and THE EVER EXPANDING
Ok....well here's my first Discovery. I stumbled across this song called Back To The Sun, from the record New Purple Dress. The opening groove on this track grabbed me instantly....totally hooked! I'm now delving into his extensive catalog. Sound for me has flavours of soul, swamp, groove, idyllic melodic pop and more. Click the image to hear Back To The Sun. Love It!
Hermanos Gutierrez
Two guitarists.....that's it. No singer, no rhythm section. Sounds like it wouldn't work....but it does! I recently stumbled across Hermanos Gutiérrez (Spanish for "Gutiérrez Brothers") - a Latin instrumental band formed in 2015 in Zürich by Ecuadorian-Swiss brothers Alejandro Gutiérrez (guitar and lap steel) and Estevan Gutiérrez (guitar and percussion). The first song that I heard was Sonido Cosmico off their new album of the same name. Have since fallen in love with It's All In Your Mind - such a triumphant vibe....beautiful chorus. I'm loving working to their music through the day as it just creates such a cool vibe. Click on the image to catch a live performance!
Okonski
I came across Okonski via the Outer Frequencies Instagram page. Okonski is the trio of pianist Steve Okonski, bassist Michael Montgomery, and drummer Aaron Frazier. The trio released their sophomore album Entrance Music in February 2026, continuing their exploration of spontaneous, luminous instrumental jazz - Jazzpedia. What I did not know until right now as I write this is that Okonski plays keyboards with THE EVER-EXPANDING, the local collective of Dr. Dog frontman Scott McMicken (see post number 1!!). I really love this entire record, which was recorded over a five day session, committed to tape at Portage Lounge, Terry Cole’s studio in Loveland, OH. It's beautiful, meditative and intricately simple.
